Description	:	George Washington Dodson,son of Ruben Dodson died at his home in Gilmore City at age 85 yrs, four months and 8 days. George was badly crippled in his feet from a severe illness contacted at the age of eight, perhaps polio. In spite of that fact he enlisted and fought during the Civil War for 3 years. Read More	George Washington Dodson,son of Ruben Dodson died at his home in Gilmore City at age 85 yrs, four months and 8 days. George was badly crippled in his feet from a severe illness contacted at the age of eight, perhaps polio. In spite of that fact he enlisted and fought during the Civil War for 3 years. His only injury was a bullet that crazed his little toe. In 1864 at the age of 24 and a farmer, he enlisted in the Civil War and was mustered out in November 1865. He served in the 13th Indiana Cavalry and was a sergeant in Company H. when mustered out. He evidently married during the Civil War but when he came back home, he married his first love, Emeline J. Eversole on Oct. 23, 1867, Mitchell, Indiana. They moved from Mitchell County, Indiana to homestead in Humboldt, Iowa in 1869 by covered wagon. They were on the road a month following the trail to the middle of Iowa. His wife, Emeline and year old daughter, Minnie, were sick all the way only pausing a day for the Sabbath. They reached Avery township in Humboldt Co. in Oct. and spent the winter in a small house with a cousin on his wife's side, Dan Eversole. George and Emeline built a 2 room house and later other rooms were added. This is where they homesteaded and raised their family. They lived there until 1894 when they retired in the nearest town, Gilmore City. Retiring was only farming on a reduced scale as they kept a horse, a cow, a pig, and rather good sized flock of chickens and a very large garden and orchard. George was interested in politics all his life and read the local newspaper daily. His speech contained many proverbs and trite saying such as "slippery as the bark on an elm tree". He was always interested in people and ready to be friendly. Five children: 1. Minnie Dodson Rowe (1868 - 1942)married Hiram Rowe 2. Rachel Elizabeth Dodson Himrod (1870 - 1952) 3. Robert Edward Dodson (1872 - 1965)* 4. Sadie Dodson Noll 5.
