Description	:	George Washington Firkins was born February 22, 1890 to Mary Elizabeth Taylor and George Anson Firkins. He died on February 10, 1983 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa after a short illness. He attended country school at Mt. Pleasant in Taylor County, Iowa and grew to manhood in the Guss vicinity. Read More	George Washington Firkins was born February 22, 1890 to Mary Elizabeth Taylor and George Anson Firkins. He died on February 10, 1983 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa after a short illness. He attended country school at Mt. Pleasant in Taylor County, Iowa and grew to manhood in the Guss vicinity. He married Gertie Branan in her home near Guss on February 18, 1914. Six children were born to this union, Cecil Howard, Ethel Darlene, Viola Verlene, Vernita, Anita Vergene, and Bessie Leda. George's father homesteaded on a farm east of Guss. Here George stayed and farmed with his father, each having a team of horses. They had a big orchard with lots of raspberries and strawberries. They had wonderful neighbors, gathering together to cut ice for the ice house and later enjoying freezers flu of ice cream or banding together to do the threshing or to make hay. After his parents' estate was settled in 1942, George bought 40 acres east of Bushville. Here George and Gertie lived and enjoyed their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George loved to go fishing, play cards, checkers, and dominoes. They went to church at the Ivyville Methodist and enjoyed many parties there, games such as Blind Man's Bluff, Old Man Tucker, and Ten Little Indians were played and later passed on to their children. Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Mary; brothers, Jon, Charles, Everett, and Clifford, his wife, Gertie; two daughters, Vernita and Anita; one granddaughter, Sheri Lynn Imel, and one great-granddaughter, Pretty Brand. Surviving are Cecil, of the home, Ethel and Clarence Findley of Anticoh, California, Verlene and Carl Brand of Sharpsburg, Iowa, Leda and Marvin Imel of Safford, Arizona, fourteen grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great -great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eva Crowell and Alta Henniger of College Springs. George Washington Firkins was a kind and considerate husband and father, a good neighbor, who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. "So when George passed on, the gates opened wide and someone said, "Why George, your red carpet is layed right down this aisle and haven't had it layed but a little while."
