Description	:	George Washington Forney was one of a family of eleven children, and was born in a tent in Scott Township, Fremont, Iowa where Thurman now stands, when there were but few houses there. He is said to have been the first white child to be born in that community. His parents moved on their homestead in Dutch Hollow, which is northeast of Thurman, in about 1850, where he grew to manhood. Read More	George Washington Forney was one of a family of eleven children, and was born in a tent in Scott Township, Fremont, Iowa where Thurman now stands, when there were but few houses there. He is said to have been the first white child to be born in that community. His parents moved on their homestead in Dutch Hollow, which is northeast of Thurman, in about 1850, where he grew to manhood. After his marriage he followed several occupations, he owned a store in McPaul, Iowa for a time and also at another time operated a sawmill near there. Coming into possession of 120 acres of land near his father's home, he engaged in farming until 1918 when his advanced age made active farm work too difficult for him. After the death of his wife, Delilah, he and the children went to lie with his widowed mother on her homestead and remained there until his second marriage in 1891 when he went back to his own home where he spent his remaining years. His death came very suddenly. His wife had risen early and built a fire and later called him and receiving no answer, found that death had taken place. He was a well known citizen, honored and respected in may ways.His funeral services were conducted by Elder H.N. Pierce of the Latter Day Saints' faith in the church of that denomination, east of Thurman, Iowa at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 1929 and the church was filled by relatives and friends.
