LAWSON DIED LAST SATURDAY Prominent Businessman Had Been Ill For Several Months LARGELY ATTENDED FUNERAL SERVICES Mr. George W. Lawson, prominent in business circles here for more than forty years, died at his home in Asbury, near Crisfield, last Saturday afternoon, from a complication of diseases. He was 63 years of age. Mr. Lawson had been in poor health for some time, had lately returned from a Baltimore hospital, and for the past several weeks had been confined to his bed. His death was not unexpected, but came as a great shock to the community. Born in Asbury District, he was the son of the late George and Maria Lawson, both of whom were descended from the early settlers of this section of Maryland, a family for which Lawsonia was named, and one which had given to the county statesmen, professional and business men in large numbers. Mr. Lawson was a very energetic and shrewd businessman. Early in his business life he owned and managed a factory for making shirts, underwear, etc., a short distance from Crisfield, and in this enterprise he was very successful. He sold out his plant and equipment to the Topkis Company, of Wilmington, Del., who operated it for some time. The plant is now being used for the making of government tents. In 1918, associated with Mr. G. E. Maddrix, he purchased the old Odd Fellows Hall Building, the second floor of which had been used for moving pictures, reconditioned the building and put in up-to-date moving picture equipment. This business prospered from the start and became one of the leading movie places of the city. March 29th, 1928, fire broke out in this theatre, which was entirely of frame, resulting in its destruction. Within a few weeks work on a new brick building was begun and the Arcade Theatre now stands at the corner of Main and Fourth streets as a monument to the energy and business acumen of Mr. Lawson and his partner. In 1926 Mr. Lawson was a candidate for Clerk of the Court for Somerset County, was elected, and served for four years. He declined to run again in 1932,and was succeeded by our present State Comptroller, J. Millard Tawes. For many years he was one of the leading figures in Republican politics in Somerset County, and was regarded as one of the most popular members of his party. There is little doubt but that he could have been elected to public office on several occasions if he had been a candidate. A life-long member of Asbury Asbury Methodist Church, he was a liberal contributor to that institution, took pride in the Church, and attended its services regularly. Mr. Lawson was a man of humane instincts. He had an excellent personality, was kindly and courteous on all occasions, and his friends were legion. He contributed much to the improvement of the community where his home is, and was the owner of a number of properties in the city. Probably no man was better known by men, women and children, in the lower part of the county, and certainly no man was better liked. In the past few months, and especially in those weeks which preceded bis death, when he was bedfast, numberless inquiries as to his condition were made day after day, and it was hoped until the last that he would show improvement. When news of his death was announced Saturday afternoon there was general regret and many words of sympathy uttered for his sorrowing family. His body was carried to Asbury Methodist Church, a short distance from his home, Monday at 12:30 o'clock and lay in state there until 2:30 o'clock the same afternoon, when funeral services, conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, were held. The church was a mass of flowers, remembrances from relatives and friends, and hundreds gathered there to hear the last words said over the body of husband, father, friend, and followed it to the Asbury Cemetery, where it was laid to rest. Honorary pall-bearers were Sheriff Fred Phoebus, Clerk of the Circuit Court Benjamin L. Barnes, Mayor William E. Ward, John Daniels, G. F. Maddrix, Warren F. Sterling, and Herman Sterling. The pall-bearers were: Paul Maddrix, Lloyd Byrd, Leonard Wilson, Harry T. Phoebus, Raymond Wilson and Rome Barnes. Mr. Lawson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lillie Mae Lawson, one daughter, Mrs. Dan Pasquella, two grandchildren, Miss Gloria Pasquella and Master George Pasquella, and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Lewis and Mrs. George C.
