Description	:	George Washington Mattingly was born October 31, 1873, in Mason County, Kentucky, the son of Richard and Anna Eliza (Valentine) Mattingly. George died November 6, 1899, in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas, just nine days before he was to wed Burnette Elizabeth "Nettie" Day on November 15, 1899. Mattingly's home when he came in just before the supper hour and announced he was not feeling well. He went to lie down for a spell before supper was to be served. When the family went to wake him for dinner, they found him dead in his bed. His fiance Nettie went on to marry Francis Leslie Hines but she always wore her engagement ring from Geroge on her right hand. Democratic Messenger (Eureka, Kansas) 16 Nov 1899, page 3: Obituary: On November 6, 1899, the death angel came suddenly to the home of Mr. John Mattingly, of Bachelor township, and claimed for his own Mr. Geo. W. Mattingly, aged 26 years and 6 days. George Washington Mattingly was born October 31, 1873, in Mason county, Kentucky. He left Kentucky in 1881, moving to Illinois, there lived for four years; coming thence to Western Kansas in 1885; finally, to Eureka, Greenwood county, in 1890. He united with the Free Baptist church at Union, March 8, 1896, and was a member of the church until the day of his death. Brother George was well known in this community as an upright, exemplary young man. He always had a kind word and a cheerful smile. His kind and friendly admonitions will never be forgotten by those with whom he associated. In his vocations of life and social recreations this estimable friend and brother ever acted with exemplary propriety, seeking the happiness of all he came in contact with. Never again on tis earth will we look into his face and hear his fine and loving voice. Oh! how we will miss him. To the bereaved father, brothers, sister and friends, we can only say - if human hands could avail to help you in this sad hour how gladly we would give it. But, alas! we cannot. We can only commend you to the Heavenly Father whose mission it is to "Bind up the broken hearted." Funeral by the writer. He came in and wanted to lie down a bit before supper. When they went to get him, they found him dead in the bead. Records at the Greenwood County Historical Society indicate his cause of death as "Congestive Chill." George died just days 9 before he was to wed Nettie Day on November 15, 1899. I was able to contact Nettie's granddaughter through Findagrave.com and found out that while Nettie married and had a family, she always wore George's wedding band on her right hand her entire life.
