Spangler, son of Israel and Elvina Spangler, was born at York, Pa., February 7, 1856. He died at his farm home, six and one-half miles southeast of Geneva, Neb., April 29, 1938, at 7:10 p .m. at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 22 days. He confessed Christ and was baptized in the German Reformed church, November 22, 1874, at White Pigeon, Mich., as a young man of eighteen and lived and died in that faith. He was married to Tenia Stutzman, January 12, 1882, in LaGrange county, Illinois. This union was blessed with two children, Bertha and Frank. In 1890 he moved with his family to Plattsmouth, Neb., and in 1893 he again moved, this time to the home where he died, where his family was reared, and where he and Mrs. Spangler spent forty-five busy, productive, happy years together. Mr. Spangler, in the later years of his life was afflicted with a physical weakness which gave him much distress and which was the cause of the sudden termination of his life. He was a very active man throughout his entire life. In his earlier years, he was engaged in ship building and after moving to Plattsmouth, was employed in the railroad shops there, being a finisher of railway coaches. Since moving to Fillmore county he was engaged in farming until later years, when he rented his land and busied himself in developing a fruit farm of forty acres, contiguous to his farm home. His trees, vines, and bushes were just beginning to reward him when the devastating drouth of the past few years wrought havoc with them. It is interesting to note that the fine large house and the commodious bank-barn and other buildings which grace the farm home were largely the result of his handiwork. Through this period of more than a half century, Mrs. Spangler has been his real helpmate and inseparable companion, ministering sympathetically to him in his last brief illness to the end. Mr. Spangler was just and fair in his business transactions and helpful to many in times of need. He will be greatly missed, not only by the inner circle of loved ones but by the many friends and neighbors he gathered about him during his long life and residence here. Those remaining to cherish his memory are his his faithful wife and companion of fifty-six years, his daughter, Mrs. Bertha Weldon of Elkhart, Ind., his son, Frank Spangler of Indianola, Ia., five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, two brothers, Maurice Spangler of Chester, Mont., and John Spangler of Govenlock, Saskatchewan, Canada, two sisters, Mrs. Susan D. Peatling of Abilene, Kas., and Mrs. Lydia S. Gassman of Washington, D. C. , and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the late residence Monday afternoon, May 2 , at 2 o'clock, by Rev. W. H. Shoaf, pastor of the Geneva Methodist church, the text for the sermon being, "We have here no continuing city, but we seek one," Heb. 13;14. Other scripture read consisted of the 23rd Psalm and selections from the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians. Mrs. A. H. Elder and Mrs. H. A. Rosenau sang, "Rock of Ages" and "We're Going Down the Valley, One by One." The casket bearers were old friends and neighbors, Ed Myers, Fred Eaton, Ross Miller, Will Elznic, Thelo Houck, and James Dunker. Burial was in the Geneva cemetery.
