Otho Stewart Martinie was born on November 26, 1853, at Mill Creek, Henry County, Kentucky, to David Martinie and Mary Jane Triplett. David Martinie, his father, engaged in farming until 1850, when he embarked in the mercantile business in Port Royal, Kentucky until 1863. He was then engaged in farming again for a while, but subsequently went into the grocery business. He retired at the age of sixty three and moved to Western Kentucky where he lived and enjoyed the income derived from his landed possessions. David Martinie was born February 12, 1824, and died January 14, 1893. The death of his wife occurred in 1857. Five children were born to this couple: Charles William; Alice Irene; John Allen, Otho Stewart, and Ethelbert Calvin. The Martinie family were of German decent as their ancestor, Ernest Frederick Julius Martinie, was a Hessian soldier contracted by the British Army and were hired to come from England to fight in the American Revolutionary War and many of them remained in the United States. Ernest Martinie was one who remained here. The Tripletts were from England. Otho Martinie moved with his father̓s family to Morroco, Kent County, Indiana, and then to Champagne County, Illinois. He practiced medicine in Fithian which is a village in Oakwood Township, Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. It is believed that Otho had trained at the Hahnemann Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio. He disappeared from Fithian about 1874; it is believed he was unable to get along with his new stepmother, so he left home. He was, however, of a mature age to be out on his own; but he did not want to have contact with his family. It was during this time, he changed his name from Otho Stewart Martinie to George Wesley Morton. He will be referred to as George Wesley Morton for the remainder of this history. George Wesley Morton and Julia Ann Falknor were married November 15, 1876, at Mankato, Minnesota. George was a pharmacist. He was told by a doctor that his health would not permit him to work with bulk medicines and he must get work in the open air. He bought a Nursery and raised plants in Mankato, Minnesota. George had worked in the drug business but he was selling nursery products for L. L. May Nursery Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota. The Morton's moved to Colorado in 1895 and lived southwest of La Jara for two years and then moved to Richfield, Colorado. George Wesley sold shares in a mine, in which he was part owner in the mountains West of La Jara (perhaps near Platoro). He collected the ore samples in Creede, Colorado. He was in Holdrege, Nebraska when he wrote a letter to his family saying that he would be in Canyon City, Colorado, the next day and would take the train for home the following day. He said he was bringing a doll for Estelle. He never did come home. We have never known why. This incident occurred in 1902. The family searched for George and never could not find out what happened to him. Later, his youngest daughter, Julia Estelle Morton Reid, with the help of her second cousin, Halsey Stevens, discovered a newspaper article in the Denver Post that was published in 1902. Halsey Stevens, wrote to the Denver Post about train accidents in 1902 and received the following, from the Nebraska Historical Society: "Saturday morning, No. 3 ran over a man, west of Brush, Colorado. There are reasons to believe that the man who is unknown was killed and placed on the track. The engineer saw no one until the engine was right onto the prostrate body on the tracks."
