Occupation: Farmer MO d/c 19213 ~~~~~~~ William Gamble was born at Vicksburg, Mississippi, December 21, 1856, and died at his home near Oak Ridge Church Monday, May 13, 1918. He had been in declining health for over one year. Last Saturday he was in Shelbina and it was generally thought that he was looking well, for one in his state of health. Monday afternoon he was about his home and when stricken was engaged in cutting weeds. He was overcome and sank to the ground. When his wife reached him he remarked, "I suppose I got too hot." These were his last words. He collapsed into unconsciousness and passed away that afternoon. His father and mother were killed at the siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War. The deceased was one of six brothers, all of whom have passed away except one brother who lives in the South. His brother, Andrew, died in St. Louis about five weeks ago. Being left an orphan when quite young, he was cared for by the late Pleas Ford, and has lived near Shelbina since he was a small boy. He was twice married, the first wife being a Miss Kidwell. His second marriage was to a Miss Taylor, who, with a son and a daughter, Mrs. G. E. Bowen survive him. William Gamble united with the Baptist church when 16 years old and through life was a man who won and held esteem of all who knew him, as was attested to by the very large number who came to pay their last respects. The church had not the capacity to accommodate the many who attended the funeral and many stood outside listening to the words of Rev. R. Alex Jones, who conducted the funeral Wednesday afternoon. Gamble at his home in Oak Ridge vicinity Monday afternoon was a shock to that community, where he had lived so long and was so well and favorably known. He had been in poor health the past year and physicians had warned the family that his passing might be sudden. He made a trip to Rochester, Minn., last fall, but the famous surgeons there could do nothing for him. Monday afternoon he was cutting weeds about the place and sank to the earth, where his wife soon found him, still conscious. She helped him to the bed, where he soon lost consciousness and passed away an hour or so later. Wm. Gamble was born in Vicksburg, Miss., 64 years ago. His mother was killed by a bomb during the siege of that place, leaving him an orphan, as his father had previously died. His negro "mammy" brought him to St. Louis where friends of the family cared for him and his brothers. As small boys they come here with the late Wm. Ford. He has since lived in Oak Ridge neighborhood, where he accumulated considerable property. He married Miss rose Taylor and five children were born to their union. Two died in infancy and one daughter died after reaching maturity. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Earl Bowen of Clarence, and one son, Charles, at home. Funeral services will be held at Oak Ridge church today at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. R. A. Jones.
