Mr. Hawks was born on February 12, 1909, in Whiting, Ks. He attended Whiting Grade School until 1920, until he moved to a farm in Holton, Ks. He attended Pleasant Grove School, where he rode 7-1/2 miles to school. He loved to play basketball and baseball. After graduation from high school, he worked one year at the Power and Light Company, Tecumseh, Ks. He attended Kansas State for two years and during the depression he hitchhiked across the country to the west coast. He was one of three picked for the Marine Corps. He spent time in China and came back to Kansas State for two years, graduating with a Physical Education degree in 1937. He went to Camden, Ark. to teach Physical Education. In 1939, he married Hazel Owens. He was called to Pine Bluff, Ark. in 1941, to work as a civilian Physical Education instructor at an Air Force Basic Training Camp. He was later commissioned and spent four years in the Army Air Corps, during World War II. He went back to school at Michigan University, where he completed his Masters Degree in Physical Education. He began teaching in Rosedale High School, in 1947, retiring in 1974. He worked with the Boy Scout Programs, helping to set up archery and rifle ranges at Roe Bartle Boy Scout Camp. He was a leader for several years. Since then, he has played golf, entered in Senior Olympics and has done a lot of fishing and canoeing. He was a member of the Overland Park Christian Church and was a State President of the Kansas Physical Education Association. He was an alumni and supporter of Kansas State and Michigan University. He was a Phi Delta Kappa. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Hazel Owens Hawks, of the home; one son, George W. Hawks, Jr., Colleyville, Tex.; one daughter, Margaret Grace Klein, Prairie Village, Ks.; one brother, Homer Hawks, Sacremento, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Hartschen, Andover, Ks. and Elizabeth Klahr, Holton, Ks.; four grandchildren, Katherine Rose Cloud, Michael David Klein, Wendy Alison Hawks, and Travis Charles Hawks.
