Description	:	George was born September 25, 1899 in Spokane, Washington to William Sanford and Christina Bertha (Knox) Ross. His mother raised him. George registered for the [World War I] draft on September 12, 1918. In October 1922, his name appeared on the list of alleged draft deserters, called the 'slacker list.' George registered for the [World War I] draft on September 12, 1918. In October 1922, his name appeared on the list of alleged draft deserters, called the 'slacker list.' It took three months for George to clear up this error. He first wrote the Adjutant General at Headquarters Ninth Corps Area, Presidio of San Francisco, who directed him to report "either in person or by letter" to the nearest military post. The American Legion in Moxee City wrote their headquarters in Seattle, who advised George to forward affidavits to Washington, D.C. On January 31, 1923, the War Department declared, "Inasmuch as he is not properly chargeable with desertion, his name has been removed from the published list as having been erroneously entered, and as wide publicity will be given to the fact of such removal as was originally given the published list." The War Department also indicated that George was considered delinquent in his registering as he did not return a questionnaire which was mailed to him on October 25, 1918. The War Department went on to say that the delinquency constituted a civil defense, and, as such, came under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice. No further correspondence has been found on this matter. An undated newspaper item found in the Ross family albums pertained to George: Sleepy Driver Injures Man. When Henry Gaudette of Moxee went to sleep while driving his automobile yesterday the car ran into a horse drawn vehicle driven by George Ross, throwing Mr. Ross out and injuring him and also hurting the horses, according to a report made to the sheriff's office. Two other wagons were just ahead of the one driven by Mr. Ross but those were not damaged. Mr. Gaudette explained that he had lost much sleep the night before and the heat made him drowsy. George's father had remarried when he was about 7 years old and he had five half-siblings. When George was 20, he married Alma Menard in Yakima. They had two sons and two daughters. He died on February 25, 1966 in Ellensburg. obituary: Funeral arrangements are pending for George W. Ross, 66, Fairview District rancher who died this morning at the Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. Mr. Ross was born September 25, 1899, at Spokane and married Alma Menard in 1919 at Yakima. He operated threshing machines and was employed in hay bailing in the Moxee area before coming to Ellensburg in 1929. He was a member of the Kittitas County Cattleman's Association and the Kittitas County Dairymen's Association and had been in failing health for the past eight years. Mr. Ross is survived by his wife at home; two sons, Robert and Leo both of Ellensburg; two daughters, Mrs. Norma (Harold) Flach, Ellensburg and Mrs. Doris (Harley) Stiles, San Antonio, Tex., his father Will Ross, Ellensburg; two half-brothers, Bill Ross of Spokane and Dean Ross of Ellensburg; two half-sisters, Mrs. Claude Dean of Spokane and Mrs. Guy Smith of Ellensburg; nine grandchildren and a great-grandson.
