Wells County, Indiana Family History 1837-1992 page 253-254 Gerald Bayless Family Gerald Dean Bayless (1906- ) was the first child of Charles Homer Bayless (1886-1968) and Laura Ethel Hoffacker Bayless (1887-1949). He was born in Rockcreek Township, Wells County, Indiana, and graduated from Rockcreek High School. Gerald married Iva Caroline Schwartz (1907-1967), also of Rockcreek Township, and they lived on the adjoining farm east of his parents home on 300N. He engaged in farming with his father, Homer, and his brother, Max. Soybeans, first grown as a hay crop, became one of their cash crops. Soybean cooperative test plots with Purdue University were started in 1940 and continued until 1980. When Gerald attended the Farmers Conference agronomy meetings held at Purdue, he became interested in producing hybrid seed corn. The first acre of hybrid seed was planted on Bayless land in 1934; six acres were planted in 1935. Gerald was one of the pioneers in the corn belt states for single cross corn and in 1940 planted his first acre of seed for commercial single cross sales. This was the beginning of the Bayless & Sons seed corn business, later known as Hybrids, Inc. Gerald and Iva had three children: Peggy (1929- ), Keith (1932-1985), and Charles Larry (1941- ). As they grew old enough, they learned to walk on the stilts used for corn detasseling (their first ones were junior sized, custom-made by "Grandad Homer") and joined the detasseling crews. Larry frequently walked on stilts at the Bluffton Street Fair and 4-H Fair parades. All three graduated from Rockcreek High School. Keith, who completed a Purdue University short course, and Larry, a 1953 graduate of Purdue, joined the family seed business. Peggy married Philip Costello (1929- ), of Bluffton. Their sons Patrick and Kevin were born in Dayton, Ohio, graduated from high school in Appelton, Wisconsin, and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Their youngest son, Michael, was born in Escanaba, Michigan, graduated from Norwell High School and Purdue University. Patrick, a CPA, married Bonnie School, of Appleton. They and their children, Megan, Brent, and Kathryn, live in Appleton. Kevin, a para-legal, lives in California. Michael, an engineer, lives in Michigan. Peggy presently lives in the home place on 300N. In 1954, Gerald and Iva moved to a newly constructed home just east of their original home, where Gerald still lives. Keith and his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Liz) Stahl (1935- ), of Lancaster, Township, moved into the older home. In 1970, they moved to a house south of Ossian on Highway 1. At about the same time, Keith started his own enterprise of growing seed corn for wholesale. Their children, Ann, Gay and Steve, are graduates of Norwell High School. Ann, a sales representative in California, has two sons, Caleb and Casey. Gay, a graduate of IPFW, is an interior designer. She lives in California and has a son Seth. Steve, who continues the enterprise started by his father, married Jean Nowakowski, of Bluffton. They and their children, Brittany, Braden and Lauren, live in Union Township on 900N. Larry married Carolyn Gearheart Hays (1943- ), of Chester Township. Their home is across the road from Gerald. Their children, George Hays and Amanda (Amy) Bayless, graduated from Norwell High School. George married Tammy Hall, of Ossian. They and their children, George, Benjamin and Andrew, live in Fort Wayne. Amy is majoring in elementary education at Butler University, Indianapolis. Larry's daughter, Lori Jo Bayless, is deceased, age four. His son, Lyle Bayless, lives in Texas.
