US Army, WW2, h of Frances Wells County, Indiana Family History 1837-1992 page 255 Max Bayless Family Max Henry Bayless (1911-1984) was the youngest child of Charles Homer Bayless (1886-1986) and Laura Ethel Hoffacker Bayless (1887-1949). He was born in Rockcreek Township, Wells County, Indiana, and graduated from Rockcreek High School in 1930. He was a farmer except for the time he served in the infantry during World War II. Max helped his father, Homer, and his brother, Gerald, farm what had been his grandparents', Oscar and Emma Bayless, farm until his marriage to Frances Mattix (1915). She was the only child of James and Nellie Cole Mattix from Blackford County, Indiana. She, too, was from the farm. In fact, she lived on only one farm before her marriage and continues to live on the 160 acres she and Max purchased in 1946 when they were married. It is located just inside Lancaster Township from Rockcreek Township on 200N. Starting out on his own farm, Max raised both livestock and grain. He later sold the livestock and raised only grain. At one time, Max also produced, processed and sold popcorn, often being called the "Popcorn Man." For a pastime, Max thoroughly enjoyed pitching horseshoes and earned several trophies. He belonged to a local club that engaged in horseshoe pitching in competition with clubs organized in surrounding counties. After retirement, he continued the sport while spending time in Arizona or Florida in winter months. Frances attended Ball State University and St. Francis College, training to be a teacher. The 1930's was not the easiest time to pursue a college degree. She taught ten years in Blackford County before her marriage, and afterwards fifteen years at Lancaster Elementary, Wells County. Since retirement, she has been involved in several volunteer services. Max and Frances were members of the First United Church of Christ in Bluffton and participated in many of its activities. Their oldest son, Ancil Louis Bayless (1945) married Marcella Berg, daughter of Nellie and Joseph Berg of Berrien Springs, Michigan. Ancil graduated from Lancaster High School and was in the service during the Vietnam conflict. Afterwards he attended Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. From Central YMCA College in Chicago, he received a degree in Respiratory Therapy, then an LPN degree form Sauk Valley Community College in Illinois. He and his family in Keene, Texas, and he and Marcella work in Fort Worth, Texas. They have a son, Kristofor, seventeen, and a daughter Kristina, nine. Their youngest son, John Allen Bayless (1946), married Diana Sue Burton, daughter of Roger and Lillian Burton of Huntington, Indiana. He too graduated from Lancaster High School. John attended Purdue University before serving in the Vietnam conflict (February 1966-August 1968). Upon his discharge, he continued his studies, graduating from Huntington College and later earning a master's degree from Ball State University. He and his wife, Sue, live and work in Houston, Texas.
