Pee Wee did a stint (1955-1959) in the U.S. Air Force, serving in North Africa. He married Diane Dugan in 1961. They were blessed with three children, Jani, Wayne and Craig. Music was always his life, and he played while working in South Dakota and Alaska. He formed the Mountain Music Show in Custer in 1978 and continued playing until his death. "And that's a period." Over the course of 40 years of music, tens of thousands of people have heard Pee Wee and his circle of friends bring them fun and enjoyment and that was exactly what Pee Wee had in mind when he started. He attended the National School of Business in Rapid City and started J&J Bookkeeping Service in 1974 and continued until selling out to Ketel Thorstenson in 1996. He was employed by Ketel Thorstenson from 1996 until he passed. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, past city councilman of Custer, Custer Chamber of Commerce, past president of Custer Senior Center, treasurer of Mitchell Wood Fox Foundation Scholarship Fund and a member of the Catholic Church. He raised funds for many organizations and donated his time and money selflessly. Especially close to his heart were the youth at the Custer Boot Camp. His spare time was taken by family, and he enjoyed camping with his grandchildren. "Pee Wee" Gerald Dean Dennis, 62, of Custer, South Dakota, died Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He suffered a stroke on Saturday, August 11. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Diane of Custer; daughter Jani and Bob Zweber of Hill City; son Wayne and Robin Dennis of Hendersonville, Tenn and Custer; daughter-in-law Cindy Dennis of Papillion, Neb.; five grandchildren Dugan and Amanda Dennis, Amie Isakson and Kelsi and Keisha Dennis; and one godson Jackson Dugan; and four brothers Lyle Dennis, Ivan "Snazz" Dennis, Howard "Butch" Dennis of Rapid City; and LeRoy Dennis of Ak; three sisters Olivia Perovich and Gloria "Sadie" Stickler of Rapid City; and Judy Holt of California; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a son, Craig Dean Dennis, and three brothers: Kenneth, Leonard and Ronald Dennis, and his parents Henry Dennis and Hope Baker Dennis and father-in-law Donald Dugan and numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary service was held Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer and Catholic Mass, Saturday, Aug. 18 at St. John's. A Community Funeral Service and Celebration of Life was held at the Mountain Music Show Barn at Saturday with burial following at Custer Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Pee Wee's name at the First Western Bank in Custer.
