State police reported yesterday that Gerald E. Gibbs was found in his pond at about 5:30 p.m. on May 10, about an hour after he had left his home. Gibbs may have been trying to clear out a beaver dam from around the pond’s drain, according to a release from Det. Sgt. William Jenkins. Gibbs’ neighbor, Marjorie Van Alstyne, said this week that Gibbs’ sister-in-law, Ruth Paige, called her just before 5:30 p.m. to say that she was worried about Gibbs, who hadn’t returned at 5 p.m. for dinner as expected. Floyd Van Alstyne went out to look for his neighbor, and found Gibbs in the pond, his wife said. Floyd used a radio to contact his wife, who remained at home, and she called 911, she said. Gibbs was removed from the pond, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, police said. White River Valley Ambulance responded, along with state police. Det. Sgt. Jenkins indicated Wednesday that cause of death remains unknown, and that the investigation continues. Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, which is in charge of funeral arrangements, has indicated that a full obituary will be in next week’s Herald. ____________
