Description	:	Gerald Eugene Childs was born on the family farm at Norden, Nebraska to George E. and Gladys Rector Childs on May 6, 1918. He died Tuesday, September 15, 1987 at the Rock County Hospital in Bassett, Nebraska, at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 14 days. Read More	Gerald Eugene Childs was born on the family farm at Norden, Nebraska to George E. and Gladys Rector Childs on May 6, 1918. He died Tuesday, September 15, 1987 at the Rock County Hospital in Bassett, Nebraska, at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 14 days. At an early age, Gerald moved with his parents to Springview, Nebraska where he attended school. He graduated from Keya Paha County High School with the Class of 1936. He was affiliated with his parents in the store business in Springview where they operated the Childs Cash Store and later the Gamble Store. In 1944 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and took his training on the Catalina Islands off the coast of California. He was assigned to a U.S. Merchant Marine ship that carried supplies from Seattle to Seward, Alaska until V-J Day in 1945. On March 18, 1949 he was united in marriage to June Goslin Childs. They made their home in Springview until September of 1951, when they moved to Long Pine, later moving to Ainsworth where he was employed by Kennedy Equipment Co. He worked for a time for Jones Implement Co., Ainsworth Monuments Co., and Geo. Madison Oil Co., before becoming assistant manager of the Searle and Chapin Lumber Co. After a time he was appointed manager when the business was sold to new owners. It was known as Aneco Lumber Co, now known as Century Lumber Co. He retired from business in August of 1982 when his health began to fail. Gerald was a member of Silver Cord Lodge, A.F. & A.M, was a past worthy patron of the Bethany Chapter #113-Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of Odd Fellows #130 of Ainsworth and a member of the Congregational Church of Christ of Ainsworth, as well as a member of V.F.W. Gerald was a kind and gentle man and a loving husband and father. His home and family and his friends meant a great deal to him. He was preceded in death by his father George Childs. Gerald is survived by his wife, June; one son, Ronnie C. Childs of Lakewood, Colorado; two daughters, Carole Miller of Torrington, Wyoming and Ester Tolle of Phillipsburg, Kansas; his mother, Gladys Lindholm; and one sister, Eula Malson of The Woodlands, Texas; and six grandchildren. He faced his illness and pain with courage and faith. He loved the outdoors and hunting and fishing.
