Description	:	BROOKINGS, SD: Gerald Irvin DeWitt was born on July 11, 1927 in Bushnell, SD, the so of John I. and Jayne (McClemans) DeWitt. He died on Wednesday, September 16, 1998 at his residence in Brookings at the age of 71. Jerry received his education in the Brookings schools. He also participated in the Atomic Bomb test following... Read More	BROOKINGS, SD: Gerald Irvin DeWitt was born on July 11, 1927 in Bushnell, SD, the so of John I. and Jayne (McClemans) DeWitt. He died on Wednesday, September 16, 1998 at his residence in Brookings at the age of 71. Jerry received his education in the Brookings schools. After receiving his education he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1946. While serving in the Navy, he served on three ships, the USS LST 133, the USS Gypsy and the USS Creon. He also participated in the Atomic Bomb test following WWII in the South Pacific. Following his discharge in 1947, he returned to the family farm. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Lou Gerrits on March 25, 1948 in Madison, SD. They continued to live in the Brookings area where he farmed and participated in various business ventures until 1957, when he and his family moved to California. While living in California, he was employed for the Standard Oil Company until 1959. Upon returning to South Dakota, he was employed as a salesman for Farmers Implement and Irrigation in Brookings until his retirement in 1991. Jerry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, the American Legion, and the VFW. He was an avid sportsman and especially enjoyed hunting, bowling and baseball. He is survived by two sons, Dan DeWitt and Tim DeWitt, and his wife Debbie, all of Brookings, SD; eight grandchildren, Patrick, Bill, Shannon, Matthew and his wife Christina, Randy, Brandon and his wife Melissa, Derrick and Shondra; one great-grandchild, Camryn; two sisters, Bette Ford and her husband, Darrel of Bruce, SD; Barbara DeWitt of Woodbury, MN. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Hazel and Ann, and one brother, John Jr. Services were held at the First United Methodist Church, Brookings, SD, on Monday, Sept. 21, 1998. Pallbearers were Bill Zink, Arnie Adams, Allen DeWitt, Virgil Pithan, Gail Pike, and George Magistad. Honorary pallbearers were nieces and nephews. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings, SD.
