The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, with the Rev. Michael MacCallum officiating. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery of St. Lawrence. Gerald John Bertsch was born July 25, 1930, in Menno to John E. and Ella (Haring) Bertsch. The family moved to a farm northeast of Miller in July 1944. He graduated from Miller High School in 1948. He graduated from Railroad Telegraphy School in Omaha Neb. From 1951 to 1955 he served as a U.S. Navy radioman aboard the U.S.S. Heerman DD-532 during the Korean War. After his discharge he worked for the Chicago and Nortwestern Railroad in South Dakota. He attended the University of South Dakota and graduated from Huron College in 1962. On May 31, 1959, he married Joan Schweigerdt at Miller. He had his own dance band in the 1950s and ‘60s. He taught music in Wolsey, Tulare, Wessington, Highmore and Miller. In 1977 be began work for Deardorf Construction. He also did contract work for townships. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, serving as a trustee and assistant head usher. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Survivors include his wife of Miller; two sons, Shane of Brookings and John of Miller, his mother of Miller; one sister, Florine Henning of Miller; one brother and his wife, Orvin and Sharon of Miller; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. Pallbearers will be Merle, Paul, Roger and Ron Bertsch, David Martinmaas, Casey Schultz and Ray Zemlicka.
