GILCHRIST Gerald Perry Gilchrist, son of James Robert and Ludena Patrick Gilchrist, was born near Keosauqua, Iowa, June 17, 1907, and passed away at Meridian, Miss., March 25, 1941, aged 33 years, 9 months and 8 days. When a small boy he moved with his family to Keosauqua and has lived in Van Buren county all of his life. He graduated from the Keosauqua high school and attended the Capital City commercial college in Des Moines. Upon his return to Keosauqua he was engaged for a time in business with his father. In recent years he has been engaged in farming and the livestock business. On May 14, 1927, he was united in marriage to Madeleine Manning. To this union three children were born all of whom survive. When about 14 years of age he united with the Keosauqua Methodist church where he held his membership until the time of his death. Gerald had a very friendly disposition and made and held his friendships easily. He was generous to a fault, a kind and loving husband and father, and a true and loyal friend. He had a rare courage which often drove him beyond his strength in the work he loved. Though he had been in failing health for some time he refused to complain or give up, and his sudden death came as a distinct shock to his loved ones and many friends. He is survived by his wife and three children. James Manning, Joyce Ann and Craig Ives; his mother, Mrs. J.R. Gilchrist of Fairfield; two brothers, Orr of Bonaparte, and Wayne of Fairfield, and one sister, Mrs. Blanche Stout of Fairfield. These together with a number of other relatives and a host of friends mourn his departure. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. C.H. Orf, were held from the Keosauqua Methodist church Friday afternoon, March 28, 1941. Interment was in the Purdom cemetery. - Obituary 2 Source: Van Buren Co. Gilchrist, 34, of Keosauqua, died Tuesday morning after a few hours’ illness in the Rush hospital in Meridian, Miss. Mr. Gilchrist and Richard Perkins, also of Keosauqua, had taken a truck load s of horses to Mississippi and intended to return home with a truck load of cattle. The deceased was stricken suddenly and information received by telephone indicated that his death was due to brain hemorrhage. Loren I. Peel of Keosauqua was also in Meridian on business and telephoned to Keosauqua Monday evening that Mr. Gilchrist was critically ill. His wife, mother, and brother, Wayne, left immediately to be with him but another telephone message early Tuesday morning reported his death. His family did not have time to reach Meridian before his death. Gerald P. Gilchrist was born June 17, 1907, on a farm in Washington township, the son of James R. and Ludema Patrick Gilchrist. He was married to Madeline Manning, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Craig Manning, and she with three children, James, Joyce Ann and Craig I., survive. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. James R. Gilchrist; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Stout; a brother, Orr Gilchrist of Bonaparte. His father and one brother preceded him in death. The body will arrive in Keosauqua Wednesday afternoon. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
