Description	:	Gerald Robert Carstensen was born April 29, 1929 to parents Hans John and Vera (Hoffman) Carstensen at the family farm near Bryant, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bryant. Gerald grew up in the Bryant area and attended Garfield #3 country school through the eighth grade. He was a farmer in this area his entire life. The home farm was recognized in 2006 as a South Dakota Century Farm. On September 24, 1950 he was united in marriage to Elvera Jansen. Read More	Gerald Robert Carstensen was born April 29, 1929 to parents Hans John and Vera (Hoffman) Carstensen at the family farm near Bryant, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bryant. Gerald grew up in the Bryant area and attended Garfield #3 country school through the eighth grade. He was a farmer in this area his entire life. The home farm was recognized in 2006 as a South Dakota Century Farm. On September 24, 1950 he was united in marriage to Elvera Jansen. They moved to their own farm where they worked together for 50 years. The couple enjoyed dancing, square dancing and traveling together. They moved to their home in Bryant in 2001. Elvera passed away in March of 2007. Gerald moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Bryant in August of 2010 and later to Parkview Care Center in September. He passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010 at the age of 81 years. Gerald loved spending time with his family, especially his great—granddaughters Clara and Sydney. He served on the church council at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and was a life-long member of the Senior Citizens in Bryant where he enjoyed playing pinochle. Those grateful for sharing in his life are one son Gary (Sharon) Carstensen, Bryant, SD; one daughter Nila (Dale) West, Brookings, SD; five grandchildren, Leigh Carstensen, Watertown, SD; Teresa (Mike) Eide and daughter Sydney, Sioux Falls, SD; Bryan (Jennifer) Carstensen and daughter Clara, Bryant, SD; Nathan West, Brookings, SD; and Veronica (Chris) Kuhlmann, Lincoln, Neb; two sisters, Dora (LeRoy) Spilde, Casselton, ND and Delores (Ed) Chapin, Vienna, SD; a brother-in-law Elwood Peterson, Willow Lake, SD; and a sister-in-law Arlene Jansen, Sioux Falls, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elvera, and one sister Shirley Peterson. Gerald R.
