Gerald Slyvester Shilman was born June 22, 1920, at Mansfield, S.D., to Fred and Alvina (Stroshein) Shilman. He attended country school in Mansfield. Gerald joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in WWII. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the Mansfield area and began farming. He married widow Viola May Crawford Johnson on June 30, 1946, in Aberdeen. Around 1950, they moved to Aberdeen, where Gerald was employed at various jobs. In 1953, he began working at Safeguard (Hub City Inc.) and continued his employment there until the time of his retirement in 1985. Gerald was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, camping, spending time outdoors and woodworking. Survivors include his wife, Viola, of Aberdeen, S.D.; one son, Ronald Shilman of Aberdeen, S.D.; two daughters, Linda (Charles) Menzia and Pam (Kenneth) Jangula, both of Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers, Marvin (Evelyn) Shilman and LuVerne (Ann) Shilman, both of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Lorraine Clemenson of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Arlene (Sherman) Davis of Long Lake, Calif. and nine grandchildren, Chad Menzia, David Shilman, Eric Menzia, Dennise Olson, Davonna Scheuffele, Heather Jandel, Justin Menzia, Terri Peters and Jerrad Jangula. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Dale Shilman and two stepsons, Neil Ben Johnson and Gary Lee Johnson. Casket bearers will be Chad Menzia, Eric Menzia, Justin Menzia, Jerrad Jangula, David Shilman and Cole Jandel. Published in Aberdeen (SD) News on Oct. 17, 2003
