Viola Mae Crawford was born March 29, 1925, to Alonzo and Olga (Dahme) Crawford at Mina, S.D. At a young age, she moved with her family to Aberdeen where she was raised and attended Aberdeen Public Schools. Viola married Bennie T. Johnson on April 18, 1943, in Vancouver, Wash. He was a soldier, and she was a student. He was called to active duty military during World War II. Ben was killed in battle. He was reported as missing in action and he was never found. Viola married Gerald S. "Gabe" Shilman June 28, 1946, at Aberdeen. They lived and farmed in the Chelsea area for several years. They moved to Aberdeen in 1951. Gabe passed away in October 2003, and Viola has continued to make Aberdeen her home. Viola was a member of the Women of the Moose and St. Paul's Lutheran Church for many years. Viola enjoyed cooking for family and friends, she also enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, playing cards and planting flowers. Viola would do seasonal decorating of her home every month according to the holiday. Viola especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving Viola are one son, Ronald Shilman of Aberdeen; two daughters, Linda (Charlie) Menzia of Aberdeen and Pam (Butch) Jangula of Aberdeen; two brothers, Maurice (Ruth) Crawford of Merced, Calif., and Gorden (Darlene) Crawford of Alcester, S.D.; two sisters, Marvel (Joe) Gallipo of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Norma (Kenneth) Dunker of Sioux Falls, S.D., 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, three sons: Neil Johnson, Gary Johnson, and Dale Shilman. Pallbearers will be Chad Menzia, Eric Menzia, Justin Menzia, David Shilman, Jerrad Jangula and Matthew Menzia. Published in the Aberdeen News on 2/25/2006.
