Traver, 96, of Brookings, SD, passed away January 13, 2017 at Brookings Health System, Brookings, SD. Stewart was born on August 16, 1920 in Brookings, SD, the daughter of William and Margaret (Schroeder) Stewart. Geraldine received her education in District #30 and was a graduate of the Brookings High school in 1938. She continued her education at General Beadle Teacher’s College in Madison, SD and received her Elementary Teaching Certificate. She continued extended studies at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. She then taught school in rural schools in Brookings, Beadle and Brown counties and in city schools in Cavour, SD and at Sioux Valley in Volga, SD for a total of 30 years. She was united in marriage to Rev. Frank Traver on December 22, 1941 in Bushnell, SD. During their marriage they traveled to all the states except Alaska. Frank passed away on November 12, 1999, in Brookings. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women’s Circle, Brookings Area Retired Teacher, “Special Teachers” and a group of former Extension Club members of Brookings County. During her lifetime she taught Sunday school, Bible School and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed various crafts, crewel embroidery, candlewick embroidery and painting. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family and friends, especially with her beloved nieces, Gerelyn and Diane. She delighted in making things special for everyone she loved. Geraldine resided at home until she was 95, before moving to the United Living Community in 2015 where she lived until her death. Geraldine is survived by two nieces, Gerelyn (Jim) Kelly of Hot Springs Village, AR and Diane (Jay) Dirksen of Hot Springs Village, AR; special family, Vern and Karen Goodsell, Derek and Renee Dirksen and Kristi and Keith Rhebb and many other loved family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, Lyle Stewart. - Rudes Funeral Home
