Description	:	Mrs. Geraldine S. Getzen, a lifelong resident of Newberry, passed away Friday morning at North Florida Rehab Center in Gainesville. Surrounded by her family, Mrs. Getzen peacefully left this earth to be united in eternal fellowship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Getzen, a lifelong resident of Newberry, passed away Friday morning at North Florida Rehab Center in Gainesville. Surrounded by her family, Mrs. Getzen peacefully left this earth to be united in eternal fellowship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mrs. Getzen married her high school sweetheart, Sam P Getzen, in 1941. They were best friends, totally devoted to each other, and shared a wonderful life together for 69 years. Geraldine was a graduate of Newberry High School, held a Masters degree in education from The University Of Florida, and was a proud member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. In 1958 Mrs. Getzen began her career as an educator in Newberry. She excelled as a second grade teacher for eight years and a curriculum coordinator for Alachua County for two years. In 1968 she became the first principal of Newberry Elementary School. Mrs. Getzen held this position for eighteen years and was loved and respected by faculty, staff and students alike. Affectionately referred to as "G" by family and friends, she was known for her quick wit, boundless energy, and talent at the piano. "G" loved to laugh, was a master story teller, and a great supporter of the Gator athletic program. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church Newberry where she faithfully served in many ways- Sunday School teacher, Choir Director, and Children's piano accompanist, to name a few. She was a strong Christian who had a great impact on the community she loved. Mrs. Getzen is survived by her husband, Sam P Getzen of Newberry; sons Pace Getzen of Newberry and Jim Getzen of Hendersonville, Tn.; Daughter-in-laws Linda Getzen of Newberry and Gail Getzen of Hendersonville, Tn.; three grand children and one great grand child. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florida Baptist Children's Homes. The funeral service celebrating the life of Geraldine will be held Tuesday July 26th at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Newberry. Interment will be in Newberry Cemetery.
