Description	:	Gainesville- Sam P. Getzen Jr., of Newberry, died Thursday, March 7th, at Haven Hospice in Gainesville. Surrounded by family and friends, he left this world peacefully and entered into eternal fellowship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Getzen Jr., of Newberry, died Thursday, March 7th, at Haven Hospice in Gainesville. Surrounded by family and friends, he left this world peacefully and entered into eternal fellowship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sam lived a long, full life, and is now reunited with his childhood sweetheart and wife of 69 years, Geraldine S. Getzen. Mr. Getzen was born in Newberry on June 25, 1923 and was a graduate of Newberry High School. He served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard during World War II on a troop transport ship in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of war. Sam was an avid Gator fan and was the Managing Director at the Campus Shop and Bookstore at the University of Florida for many years. He was a Mason, and served as a board member with the National Association of College Stores as well as being a Director Emeritus with the Campus USA Credit Union in Gainesville. Mr. Getzen loved Florida and possessed a wealth of knowledge regarding the old days of the Sunshine State. He was influential in the founding of the Florida Cracker Horse Association and remained active until his death. Sam was a faithful member at the First Baptist Church in Newberry where he served as a deacon for decades. Affectionately called "Pop" by family and friends, he was slow to anger, and quick to forgive. He was a true Southern gentleman and was known for his calm demeanor and eagerness to help those in need. He was loved and respected by folks who knew him, and his encouraging words, kindness, and wisdom will be missed by many. Mr. Getzen is survived by sons, Pace (Linda) Getzen of Newberry and Jim (Gail) Getzen of Hendersonville, TN;. Granddaughters Mary Lynne Davis of High Springs, Christi Schroader of Nashville and Amy James of Raleigh, NC; great grandsons Jarrett Davis of High Springs and Samuel Getzen James of Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florida Baptist Children's Homes. 863-687-8811. Visitation with the family will be Monday March 11th from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Milam Funeral Home in Newberry. The Funeral Service celebrating the life of Pop will be held on Tuesday March 12th at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Newberry. Interment will be in the Newberry Cemetery.
