Gus was born on August 3, 1937, in Houghton, the son of Edwin and Margaret Mertens Ward. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church of Houghton. He was a retired farmer and truck driver. He married Francine Dingman on August 9, 1958. Survivors include his wife, Francine; one son, Eddie Ward of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Karen (husband Gary) Knapp of Lowell and Kay Ward of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Carl (wife Lynn) Ward of Waynesboro, Ga.; one stepsister, Rae (husband Clarence) Holtkamp of Salem; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, and two brothers. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a Christian Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at Link Funeral Home in West Point. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Houghton, with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Memorials may be made to St. John's Catholic Church or Marquette Schools.
