The Miller Press, Miller, Hand, South Dakota Thursday, September 21, 1961, p1 c6 Last Rites Held For Mrs. Ben Magness Funeral services for Mrs. Ben Magness were held Sept. 22 at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Moberly conducting the services. Mrs. Magness, 80, died Sept. 17 following an illness of several years. Pallbearers were Harvey Harris, George Ford, Mark Davis, Owen Mann, Herman Lacy and Paul Robinson. Interment was in the St. Lawrence Cemetery. The Reck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Gertrude Alice Sayre was born in Rock County, Minn., Sept. 24, 1881. Early in life she became a member of the Methodist Church. She was graduated from high school in Larchwood, Iowa and taught school for six years near her home. She was married June 28, 1905 to Benjamin F. Magness and they were the parents of three children. A son, Frank Lewis, died in infancy. In 1906 they moved to St. Lawrence where they lived until 1935 when they moved to Hawarden, Iowa. They also lived in Laurens, Iowa and Ireton, Iowa, coming to Miller in 1946 where they remained. Mrs. Magness was active in church and community work as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the First Methodist Church, Methodist Woman Society of Christian Service, Jean's Circle and the Friendship Sunday School Class. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. R. C. Willett (Avis) San Francisco, Calif. And Ruth, Miller; one grandson, Dr. Leighton Linn., Bridgewater and a great granddaughter, Kristine Linn; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Austin, Pringle, Mrs. Eliza Rollog, Valley Springs and Mrs. Lulu Miller, Los Angeles, Calif.
