Ludens, daughter of Cornelius and Wilelmina (Feekes) Ludens, was born on December 28, 1899 on the family homestead in Turner County near Davis, SD. She grew up in the Davis area and graduated from Centerville High School. Gertrude moved to Sioux Falls, SD and was employed as an operator at Northwestern Bell Telephone. She was united in marriage with Charles Joseph Whitman on January 4, 1921 in Rock Rapids, IA. The couple lived in Sioux City, IA. Gertrude returned to Sioux Falls and continued her career with the phone company. She also worked in Omaha, NE and Detroit, MI with Northwestern Phone Company to establish their major switchboards. Gertrude was united in marriage with Albert Zadow on October 4, 1939 in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls where she was a homemaker. Gertrude occasionally rode with Albert in his truck while he made deliveries. After Albert's retirement, the couple moved to Milbank, SD and then to Ortonville, MN. Following Albert's death in 1973, Gertrude returned to Sioux Falls. She moved to Dow-Rummel Village in 1984 where she remained. Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Robert J. Whitman, Port Angeles, WA; four grandchildren, Rhonda Whitman Wentzel and her husband, Eric, Portola Valley, CA, Jill Neske and her husband, Terry, Port Angeles, WA, Blake Whitman and his wife, Judy, Eatonville, WA, Jay Whitman, Kenmore, WA; four great-grandchildren, Allison Wentzel, Portola Valley, CA, Kory Neske, Port Angeles, WA, Jessica and Katie Whitman, both of Eatonville, WA; a niece, Darla Ludens, Centerville, SD; three nephews, Gordon Ludens and his wife, Pam, Viborg, SD, Fenton Ludens and his wife, Linda, Madison, SD, Eugene Ludens, Lindstrom, MN; additional nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her parents; one sister, Pearl Lundeen; and one brother, John Ludens. Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Dow-Rummel Village immediately following the funeral service and prior to the committal service.
