It reads as follows: DIED On the 21st of October, 1875, at the residence of her son-in-law John Ackley, Esq., near Athens, of Lung Fever, Mrs. GERTRUDE HANING, relict of James Haning, aged 81 years, 3 months and 20 days. It reads as follows: DIED On the 21st of October, 1875, at the residence of her son-in-law John Ackley, Esq., near Athens, of Lung Fever, Mrs. GERTRUDE HANING, relict of James Haning, aged 81 years, 3 months and 20 days. The deceased came to Athens Co., Ohio, with her father, John Brooks, in the Spring of 1800, and with the exception of three or four years' residence in Scipio township, Meigs Co., Ohio, she has been a resident of this county for the last 75 years. She was a consistent, exemplary Christian from her youth until her death. Rev. H.J. Carr preached the funeral sermon in a beautiful grove near the Haning Church in Lodi township, to a large assemblage of friends and relative, on the 24th. Everything combined to render the funeral ceremonies solemn and impressive. The service were held in the grove she had selected for church and cemetery purposes many years ago--surrounded by her old neighbors, friends, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren' the ripe autumnal leaves quietly but constantly falling upon and about the casket that contained the remains of the aged veteran and pioneer who had quietly fallen asleep in Jesus.
