Ira Z., son of James and Gertrude Haning, was born in Alexander, Ohio., in June, 1825. His parents were first Methodists and later Freewill Baptists, and were faithful in giving religious instruction to their twelve children. James, a brother of Ira, was converted in 1835, and later Rev. I. Z. Haning. became a minister. Ira was converted in 1843 and joined the church in Lodi, where the family then resided. He soon decided that it was his duty to preach, and studied two years in the University of Ohio at Athens. He also engaged in teaching, and during this time preached at various places acceptably. He received license in February, 1846, and two years later was ordained at Lodi by Rev's Job Kittle, D. C. Tapping, and S. S. Branch. The churches of the Athens Q. M., then recently formed, needed pastoral care, and he itinerated among them all for several years. He gave himself to this work with great energy. By day and by night he was on the alert, traveling through all kinds of weather, sometimes over the worst of roads, and enduring great hardships, but never faltering. At Albany, where lived many respectable non-professors and skeptics, it "was determined, about the year 1855, to have a meeting to suit their own fancy, and several ministers were invited to be present. Only Brother Haning responded to the call; but, happily, a good part of those who originated the enterprise were converted, a church was organized, and two years later a meeting house was dedicated. Brother Haning soon made his home in Albany. While there he was married to Miss Irene Wood, in 1859, and continued to live there many years. He served for a time as chaplain in the army, and in 1870 moved to Rio Grande, Gal1ia County. While at Albany he had been largely instrumental in founding Atwood Institute, and his purpose in going to Rio Grande was that he might give his influence for the founding of Rio Grande College. He was president of the trustees of these two institutions at the time of his death, and a trustee of Hillsdale College. He was also president of the Ohio Free Communion Baptist Association, and had been a member of the General Conference. But, while giving thought to these general interests, he did not neglect his pastoral work. He usually had charge of several churches, and they were prosperous under his care. His labors were excessive, but he enjoyed the work. This active life closed Sept. 27, 1878. Brother Haning was eminently practical, industrious and self-sacrificing. His sermons were able. As a revivalist he had few superiors, and he was also successful in pastoral work. He baptized two thousand converts, and a very wide circle of devoted friends mourned at his death.
