Read More	Obituary from Helena's Independent Record 01/10/2006: Gertrude N. Gullickson died Jan. 7, 2006. She was born Oct. 7, 1915. In the year of 1912, Werner Nikkila and Helmi Antinkuupa immigrated to the United States from Finland to follow their dream of a better life and family. They were married in 1914 in Southern Cross and in 1915 they were blessed with Gertrude. They spent the first two years of Gert's life in Butte and then moved to Wicks, a small rural town that was served by the Great Northern Railroad, where Gert spent a wonderful youth growing up in the mining and ranch atmospheres. Gertie was very mobile in her youth as she attended grade school in Basin, taking the train on Monday and returning to Wicks on Friday. During that time she helped Werner supplement the family income by cooking sugar to color the moonshine that was made for local distribution. Gertie had her own horse and spent many days roaming the hills around Wicks, Comet, Corbin, High Ore, Mount Washington, Three Brothers, Jefferson City and Clancy. During high school, Gert lived in the dorms at Boulder with various return trips to Wicks by hitching a buggy, train or car ride, walking the Wicks pass or walking the Amazon Tunnel with her classmates. The Jefferson County High School class of 1934 had 12 students. In 2004 Bunchie Habb and Vern McCullough were able to have a 70th class reunion with Gert, which brought joy and memories to their last few days. Gert graduated and was married to Ski Schiavon in 1934 and Terry arrived in February of 1935. After their divorce Gert worked at the Diamond S Hot Springs and the Ted Knowles Ranch in the Boulder Valley before moving to Helena. She attained employment at the Judge Lester Lobel residence and moved to the Northern Pacific Beanery in 1938 as the graveyard cook. She met the love of her life, Howard Gullickson, as he was working as the Night Yard Bull at the Helena Yards for the Northern Pacific. They were married in 1942 and Howard left for the European theater to help win the war. Gert worked her cooking skills at the Park Café, Bradies Café and the Antler Café in Phillipsburg until Howard returned. Gert then settled in at the New York Dry Goods Company (Fligelman's) until 1973. In 1947 Gary came into their life followed by Alan in 1953. With Terry starting school in 1940 and Alan graduating in 1971, Gert had children in the Helena school system for a remarkable 31 years. Daughter Terry was married in 1958 to Burt Luchsinger and they blessed Gert with six grandchildren: Dirk, Jay Jonathan, Lisa, Tina, Anna and Keri Lynn. Alan was married in 1981 to Barb Harris and they added Nikkila and Tyler to the growing extended family. Gary married Linda Semones in 1985 and brought forth Kira, Derf and Hannah Jane to bring the third generation total to 11 grandchildren. This has since multiplied to 16 fourth generation great-grandchildren. In April of 2004 Haley arrived to mark a happy and historic moment in Gert's life - the 5th generation on the ground. Gert was always active in Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Disabled American Veterans, Cub Scouts, Westmont, Helena Women's Club, State Library, Pinochle Club and taking care of her precious family. She also volunteered for many organizations after her retirement. Her culinary skills became renowned because of her superb "super 11 course mini breakfasts," cakes out of this world, Finn biscuits, Finn rolls and Finn bread. Finn cheese was also a regular treat in her home. Her Watergate cake completed many parties and weddings. Her ability to make the simplest ingredients into a delicious feast was unsurpassable. Weight Watchers gave her a symbolic plaque for increasing their membership because of her cooking skills. Gert's family grew as she lived independently for 20 years after Howard died. During this time she developed another extended family base that she remained in contact with until her final days. We will miss Gert's bits of wit and charm. The joy that she brought to folks was always returned with kindness and love. If you did not stand tall in your shoes, Gert would wake you up and make you think about your life and direction in just a few pleasant words and a big smile. We will all continue to love Gert and we hope to follow in her footsteps in kindness to fellow human beings. Gert's words to her family - "We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go we take a little of each other everywhere." Vaya Con Dios - Gert we will love you and miss you forever. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today, the family will be available to receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
