Mrs. Overaker was born in Orange County, the daughter of the late John Marshall Smith and Elizabeth Cole Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Overaker, her son, Ronald Forrest Overaker of Durham, a great-grandson, Brandon Jesse Overaker and a great-granddaughter, Sara Marcene Overaker. Read More	HILLSBOROUGH: Gertrude Elizabeth Overaker, 97, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Brookshire Nursing Center. Mrs. Overaker was born in Orange County, the daughter of the late John Marshall Smith and Elizabeth Cole Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Overaker, her son, Ronald Forrest Overaker of Durham, a great-grandson, Brandon Jesse Overaker and a great-granddaughter, Sara Marcene Overaker. Gertrude was a caring, independent, and strong soul, who found meaning and value in faith, family, hard work, and service. She could be found mowing her own grass until her mid-80's, loved to care for her grandchildren, and helped prepare many of the brunswick stews that financed the original structure of the church she attended most of her life. She found joy in time spent with friends and family, and in her later years treasured singing with the First Baptist Hillsborough "sing-along" group. She instilled in each of her 6 children all of these values, along with a sense of personal responsibility for the successful outcome of your own life. These values will be passed along for generations to come. Mrs. Overaker is survived by her daughters, Judith McGhee of Hillsborough, Phyllis Ross (George) of Boston, MA, and Peggy Berryhill (Lee) of Hillsborough, NC; sons Wayne Thomas Overaker (Carolyn) of Walkertown, and Larry Overaker (Helen) of Hillsborough; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Overaker of Durham, and 12 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 22, 2016, 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Hillsborough, with Dr. Randy Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Hillsborough. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Clements Funeral Home in Hillsborough. ******************************* Daughter of John Marshall Smith and Elizabeth Cole Smith.
