'''''''''''''' Ulysses Dispatch (Ulysses, Nebr.), January 11, 1940, p. 5, cols. 5 & 6 Mrs. James Ward The Ulysses people were deeply grieved when news came that Mrs. James Ward had passed away at the Seward hospital on the morning of Jan. 3rd. She had been ill of infection in one of her ears and was taken to the hospital a few days ago, hoping for restoration, but it was not to be and she passed away to the Great Beyond at the early age of 32 years, leaving her husband and three children, the youngest a babe of 5 weeks. There are also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Powers, of David City, seven brothers, Dan and Charles of California, James of Utah, Adlai, Tom, Leon and John; two sisters, Mrs. Owen Gray, of Omaha and Mrs. Roland Hillyer of Albion, Nebr.; other relatives and hosts of friends who unite in tendering condolence to the bereaved loved ones. Prior to her marriage seven years ago, Gertrude, as she was familiarly known, lived at the home of her parents near Ulysses, and was ever a dutiful daughter and loving sister. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and it would seem that she came to the parting of the way all too soon, but the Lord always knoweth best. Gertrude was a devout member of St. Mary's parish and a valued member of the Ladies Altar Society, the members paying tribute to her memory by way of recitation of the Rosary at her home on the day preceding her funeral which occurred at the Ulysses Catholic church Friday morning at 10 o'clock, Jan. 5, the services being conducted by her pastor, Rev. Father Downey, who celebrated s requiem high mass for the repose of her soul. He gave a very impressive sermon. A large number of friends were present despite the extremely cold weather. her parents, of David City, and brother James of Utah, were present but Dan and Charles could not be here. Her other brothers and two sisters were also present. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery near town, when the beautiful book of her life was closed.
