November 21—The funeral of Miss Gertrude Thomas Shelly, who was instantly killed by her little brother late Friday evening, took place at McKendry Methodist Church Sunday, and was attended by an immense crowd. The death of the bright young woman cast a gloom over this town, and the entire county around, where she was well known. Further particulars of the tragedy show that the accident was distressing in the extreme. Miss Shelly went around the house near the barn to meet a friend, Miss Crealen, who had come to borrow a book, and found her little brother, Herbert, aged twelve, sitting on the ground with his father's gun. She told him he had better put the gun down, as he might shoot some one. She was standing over him at the time, the gun pointed directly towards her. The boy playfully declared he would shoot, and pulled the trigger. The boy did not know the gun was cocked, or that it was loaded. The charge struck the young lady in the cheek; entered the right eye, and carried away a part of the skull on that side. The unfortunate girl, who was just twenty-three years old, was engaged to be married to Mr. William Dabney Burch, a well to do farmer of King William county, and the marriage would have occurred in a few weeks. She was the daughter of Mrs. Delilah Shally and the late Captain William Shelly, and besides her mother, she leaves two sisters, Misses Emma and Nancy; two brothers, Harry and Herbert. The pall-bearers were J. C. Fox, R. G. Dunn, C. R. Reed, W. D. Wormley and Harry Brizendine. In the absence of her pastor, Rev. C. H. Williams, of the Methodist Church, Rev. R. W. Fox, of the Christian Church, conducted the services in the presence of a large concourse of friends. Nearly every family in the county brought floral tributes.
