Gross, of Thornton, collided with one owned by Joe Steenhard and driven by his 20 year old son, Dick Steenhard, at the intersection of the Latimer-Thornton road and the Franklin-Cerro Gordo county line seven miles west of there last Monday afternoon at 2:30 P.M. The dead are Joe Steenhard and Mrs. Joe Steenhard. The injured are George Steenhard and Dick Steenhard, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Steenhard, and Buford Gross, driver of the other car. Mrs. Steenhard suffered a broken neck and died instantly. Mr. Steenhard was removed to the Lutheran hospital in Hampton, where he died at 9:05 P.M. Monday evening. A blow on the left side of his head which cut the scalp and depressed the skull so that it pressed on the brain was given as the cause of his death. Dick Steenhard and George Steenhard were both taken to the Lutheran hospital at Hampton. Dick was released from the hospital Monday night. A bad cut on the nose was his most serious injury. George received a fractured lower pelvic bone and is still in the hospital. Buford Gross climbed out of his car after the crash and went to the Nels Anderson place, nearby, to summon aid. He was unable to reach the house and collapsed at the gate. Steenhard Car Hit Testimony in the investigation of the accident conducted by Franklin County Coroner J.F. Martin, of Latimer, indicated that the Gross car had struck the Steenhard auto amidship as the two came together at the intersection. The Steenhard family, accompanied by the family of Mr. Steenhard's brother, D.D. Steenhard, was driving north, enroute to Mason City, and Gross approached the intersection from the west. Gross stated that he did not see the Steenhard car until he was right on it, and that he applied the brakes and attempted to avoid the crash. Dick Steenhard, driver of the other car, stated that his view of the road from the west was obstructed by a tree and some shrubbery at the corner and he didn't see the Gross machine until it was about thirty feet from him. Other occupants of the Steenhard car stated that they did not see Gross approaching until he was about five feet from them. The Steenhard car was pushed to the northeast corner of the intersection, but was not tipped over. It was standing upright when the ambulance arrived and the injured parties were removed. Mrs. Steenhard had already expired when taken from the car. Funeral This Afternoon Double funeral services will be held this afternoon at Zion Reformed church west of Chapin for Mr. and Mrs. Steenhard, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Johann Schmidt. Mr. Steenhard was born January 23, 1888, in Butler County. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Steenhard, of the Chapin community, and moved with his parents to Franklin county when three years of age. Mrs. Steenhard, nee Gesina Dannen, was born in Germany, November 17, 1886, and moved with her parents to Hardin County, Iowa, forty years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Steenhard were married July, 1912 and since that time have made their home in the Chapin community. They are survived by six sons, Dick Steenhard, Else Steenhard, Engelard Steenhard, Klaas Steenhard, John Steenhard and George Steenhard, and by one Daughter, Miss Florence Steenhard, all at home. Mr. Steenhard is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Steenhard, of Latimer; by three brothers, Klaas D. Steenhard, of Sheffield; D.D. Steenhard, of Thornton; and John Steenhard , of Latimer; and by two sisters, Mrs. Will Proctor, of Clear Lake; and Mrs. Abbe Meints, of Meservey. Mrs. Steenhard is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Else Dannen, of Ackley; two brothers, Sebo Dannen of Latimer; and Otto Dannen, of Swaledale; and by one sister, Mrs. Oelamnn, of Ackley.
