He was the husband of the late Gertrude (Morse) Howland of 56 years who passed away on November 23, 2008. Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Gideon T. and Elvira (Carr) Howland, he was a lifelong area resident and wintered in Florida for 18 years. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School. Read More	DARTMOUTH, MA — Gideon Allen Howland, age 78, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, suddenly at home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Gertrude (Morse) Howland of 56 years who passed away on November 23, 2008. Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Gideon T. and Elvira (Carr) Howland, he was a lifelong area resident and wintered in Florida for 18 years. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School. Mr. Howland was the Director of Farm Services for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections for 32 dedicated years of service. He was affectionately known as Tiny, Gid and Pup. He and his late wife ran the youth group for Smith Neck Friends Meeting House for many years. He enjoyed farming, fishing, camping and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by five children, Carol Lawrence of New Bedford, Debbie Reid and her husband, Bill, Barbie Coyle and her husband, Kevin, Millie Scott and her husband, Brad and Gideon Howland and his wife, Cindy, all of Dartmouth; a brother, Steve Howland; and a sister, Eleanor Johnson, both of Dartmouth. He was loved and adored by his 13 grandchildren and his 11 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James T., Richard and Russell Howland. His memorial service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2009, at 11:00 in the Smith Neck Friends Meeting House, 594 Smith Neck Rd., Dartmouth. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-7 pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 220 North Main St., Natick, MA 01760. Private burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
