Leeling Jan 20, 1885 I don't remember the first time I met my great great grandpa, Gideon, but the picture to the right is of us as the oldest and youngest of the 4 generations. His son, George and grandson Bob filled in the quartet. I do remember attending Gids 100th birthday party at son Georges house in Des Moines in 1956. I would have been 7. Have you ever seen a normal size cake with 100 lit candles? It looked like a forest fire to a 7 year old! Grandpa stayed in Eddyville the last years of his life at what was then called a nursing home. But it was a great big house with lots of bedrooms. Grandpa had a room, all to himself, just like a teenager. It was such a home like atmosphere, nothing like the clinical setting of today. Stories of Gid were passed down to me, so I will briefly archive some of them here. Gid told of his youth on the farm which he loved. He told of having Indians for neighbors when he was a child and that they traded goods all the time. As an adult, who farmed, he purchased several adjoining acres from another neighbor on a handshake. When Gid passed away, the court house had no papers on his ownership, but a judge granted the land to the estate since Gid had paid the taxes on it for over 60 years. Gideon and Mary had two children, George and Maude. Gid built a barn on his farm, held together with dowels. There was not one nail used in the consturction of that barn and it still stands strong today. George became a farmer also and often used the horse team that belonged to Gid. Gid had his own way of leading the team. All commands (Gee, Haw and Ho) were followed by G-- D--- it. The horses wouldn't follow any commands without the follow up, which George refused to say, so the sharing of the horses didn't work out too well until George got them trained to his commands. Gid was a very large man, and his wife Mary, who I did not have the privilige to meet, was a tiny little thing. One day when a neighbor was visiting and Grandpa and he were indulging in firewater (a frequent thing for Gid), Mary came out the door carrying a heavy bucket of coal cinders from the furnace out to the driveway. The neighbor asked Gid why he wasn't carrying that for her. Gids repy was that no one could do it correctly but her, so he just guessed she would have to do it. Maude married Charles Johnson and stayed in Eddyville all her life. Her, Charlie and their son, Wayne are buried in the protestant section of the Eddyville cemetery. My thanks to the caretakers of the Eddyville Cemetery. After my visit, and lenthty hunt for Gid and Marys gravestone several years ago, which was totally buried under thick evergreen bushes, the caretakers immediately cleared the bushes and exposed the stone.
