CALDWELL Gilbert Carlton Caldwell passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 1953 at the Ottumwa hospital at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 28 days, following a long illness. He had been a patient at the hospital since August 16th. The son of George and Catherine Caldwell, he was born June 28, 1879, in Wayne county, Iowa. A resident of Wayne county his entire life, he farmed until 1918 at which time he became a salesman for the Acme Feed Company. Later he managed the Farmers Exchange in Humeston for 20 years. He owned and operated his farms until the time of his death. He was superintendent of the Unity Baptist church Sunday school for many years prior to moving to Humeston. He then transferred to the First Baptist church of Humeston where he was a member of the church board of Deacons and Superintendent as well as teacher to the young married peoples class for many years. He was a member of the Humeston town council for many years. His marriage to Eliza Guinn took place August 30, 1899, in Wayne county. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Everett Caldwell of Humeston, two daughters, Thelma Swanson of Ottumwa and Opal MacAllister of Vinton, three grandsons, Gilbert Caldwell of Newton, Jack MacAllister of Mason City and Ronald Swanson of Ottumwa, and three great-grandchildren. Two brothers also survive, Clede of Humeston and Otis of Allerton, two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Sponsler of Humeston and Mrs. Dora Jackson of Leon, besides a host of friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 28, from the Humeston Baptist church, the Rev. P. H. Blunt officiating. Singers were Lafe Gibson, Willard Eaton, Audrey Dent and Helen Richard, accompanied by Mrs. Margaret Humeston. Pallbearers were nephews Elmer McCart, Joe Elder, Bill Elder, Earl Sponsler, Clede Poland and Marvin Caldwell. Burial was made in the Humeston cemetery. Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. A. I. Roe were in charge of the flowers.
