Description	:	Funeral services for Gilbert D. Gilges, 83, Baldwin City, were Saturday at the Worden United Methodist Church in Worden, Kansas. Burial was in Worden Cemetery. Mr. Gilges died Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 6, 1917, the son of May Anna (Rappard) and Dudley H. Gilges. He was raised on the family farm in the Worden area. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1936. After graduation he moved to rural Douglas County where he farmed until his death. Mr. Gilges died Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 6, 1917, the son of May Anna (Rappard) and Dudley H. Gilges. He was raised on the family farm in the Worden area. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1936. After graduation he moved to rural Douglas County where he farmed until his death. Mr. Gilges married Hazel Irene Gilliland on June 12, 1941. They were married more than 54 years until her death on December 31, 1995. He was trustee and delegate to conference for the Worden United Methodist Church for several years. He was also a 4-H leader for 30 years. He served on several boards and committees including: Baldwin City school board; School Unification Committee; Douglas County Red Cross; Douglas County Council on Aging; the United States Department of Agriculture, Stabilization and Conservation Committee; State Membership Committee of Farm Bureau; Douglas County Farm Bureau board member. He was also past president of: Franklin County Co-op Board at Ottawa; Douglas County Farm Bureau; Knife and Fork Club, and treasurer of the Willow Springs Township for the past 27 years. Throughout his years of community service he was recognized with many awards. Some of those were: Douglas County Extension Appreciation Award, Dorothy Akin Leadership award, 10 years of service with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and eight years of membership with Patrons of Ottawa Co-op. He and his wife were also presented the Family of the Year Award in 1969. He is survived by four daughters: Judith Sieg, Lawrence; Carolyn Hicks and her husband, Joseph, Lawrence; Glenda McDaniels and her husband, James, Baldwin City; Nancy Stephany and her husband, Norman, Avon Lake, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother, LaVerne Gilges.
