Description	:	Gilbert Earl "Gib" Smith, 79, passed away Thursday in Livingston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith was born in Tennessee, Illinois, on July 27, 1905, the son of Seborn and Minnie Green Smith. He had five sisters and eight brothers. The family moved to Montana in 1916 when Gib (as he was nicknamed) was 11 years old They came to Ryegate and lived in the Big Coulee where he attended the school on the old "79" Ranch while they lived in the Coulee. It was there Gib learned to trap and hunt coyotes. He had his own horse and pack of... Read More	Gilbert Earl "Gib" Smith, 79, passed away Thursday in Livingston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith was born in Tennessee, Illinois, on July 27, 1905, the son of Seborn and Minnie Green Smith. He had five sisters and eight brothers. The family moved to Montana in 1916 when Gib (as he was nicknamed) was 11 years old They came to Ryegate and lived in the Big Coulee where he attended the school on the old "79" Ranch while they lived in the Coulee. It was there Gib learned to trap and hunt coyotes. He had his own horse and pack of hounds. With the help of a man named Bowman, Gib learned to play the violin when he was about 14 years old He was also self-taught in playing the guitar, banjo and harmonica. After one year in the Coulee, the family moved to Big Timber on Otter Creek. They lived on the Moorhead place for two years. In 1919, they bought the Morrison place in the Coulee and moved back there where they lived for three more years. In 1923, they came back to Big Timber where they lived until 1926 when they sold out and moved back to Illinois. Gib didn't like the East, so the next spring he and his brother Lester rode a motorcycle back to Montana. It was quite a trip back then as the roads were dirt or gravel nearly all the way. In 1929, Gib bought a Reo truck and began many years of hauling for farmers in the Gibson country and later in many other areas. He met his wife, Lillian Nevin, at a schoolhouse dance and they were married a year later on March 9, 1931 in Harlowton. In 1944, they gave up country life to move into Big Timber where they have since made their home. Gilbert is survived by his wife Lillian; two daughters, Lilly Norris of Glendale, AZ, and Louise Turner of Bozeman; one brother, Benjamin Smith of Wichita Falls, TX; two sisters, Ocle Downing of Warsaw, Il, and Ann Ridings of Stone Mountain, GA; four grandsons, three granddaughters and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son. Earl Errnil Smith in 19S9. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Monday from the Lowry Funeral Home with the Rev. Werner Seibert of the Evangelical Church officiating, Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery. Casket bearers were Henry McCauley, Lewis Larson, Walter Braughton, Gerald Ridings, Forrest Ullman, and Terrill Tollefson.
