Gilbert was born July 13, 1911 to Jacob Frederick and Julia (Serr) Ulmer in York County near Lushton, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed in the reformed faith. He attended District #52 school in Burke, South Dakota. After school, he farmed until 1940 when he joined the U.S. Army. Ulmer 1911 - 1995 SUTTON - Gilbert Frederick Ulmer, 83 of Sutton, died Saturday, April 22, 1995 at Veteran's Home in Grand Island, Nebraska. Gilbert was born July 13, 1911 to Jacob Frederick and Julia (Serr) Ulmer in York County near Lushton, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed in the reformed faith. He attended District #52 school in Burke, South Dakota. After school, he farmed until 1940 when he joined the U.S. Army. He served under General George Patton in the Seventh Infantry Regiment serving in North Africa and the European Theater during WW II. He received the purple heart, after being wounded in action. He just recently moved to Grand Island Veteran's Home after a short stay at the VA Medical Center. Gilbert was a member of the Argonne American Legion Post #61 of Sutton. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his daughter Cindy Ulmer of Juniata, Nebraska, 6 brothers, Adolph of Bayard, Nebraska, Reinhold of Sutton, Edward of Haxtun, Colorado, Milton of Redding, California, Herman of Sutton and Walter of Texarkana, Texas; 2 sisters Esther Ochsner of Lincoln and Inez Bullock of Huntington Beach, California; 2 grandchildren; many, many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at the Kohler Mortuary Chapel in Sutton on Tuesday, April 25, 1995. Burial was in the Sutton Cemetery. The Rev. Peter Grossmann officiated. Special music was provided by Donna Bauer and Shirley Syring. Betty Barbee played the organ. Military rites were provided by American Legion Post #61, of Sutton. Pallbearers were: Robert Ulmer, Ray Ulmer, Duane Mau, Perry Ulmer, Ardean George and John Miller. Arrangements were made by Kohler Mortuary of Sutton.
