Giles was the son of Harman McCumber and Lydia Wright and the youngest in a family with a number of children. His brothers William and Adolphus both served in the Civil War. Adolphus was in the 16th NY Infantry, the "Straw Hat Brigade," and was killed in 1862 at the Battle of Gaines' Mill. William was an artillery officer who was wounded at the Wilderness and re-enlisted at the end of the war, only to return to Parishville before heading west in 1869 to take up farming in Dallas Co., Iowa. Giles moved to Sycamore, Illinois in the late 1860s, married Alice Ashcraft there in 1869 and sometime in the early 1870s, probably around 1872, moved along with Alice's family to Dallas County, Iowa where he was farming next to his brother William in the 1880 census. Giles and Alice had the following children: Agnes (McComber) Stevens Lydia (McComber) Reece - Lydia, married a man named Ludovic Daniel ("Dan") Reece and they farmed in Iowa until he died. Mabel (McComber) Winchel - married Benjamin Winchel in December 1893 in Sioux City and her son Paul was born there in 1894. Mabel died of "consumption" (TB) in 1903. Adolphus McComber (who died in infancy) Harmon (Harm) McComber - Harm died about 1900 of yellow fever contracted in Cuba while serving in the Spanish-American War. Burton (Burt) McComber - went on to become a vaudeville actor and an uncredited extra in a 1921 Charlie Chaplin movie ("The Idle Class") before going into real estate in LA. He died there in January 1935. Giles and Alice divorced in 1895 in Sioux City, Iowa, and by 1900 Giles had moved on to Cherry County, Nebraska as a farmhand on the Dahlgren Ranch. His nephew Gardner Folsom, son of his sister Charlotte (Macomber) Folsom, had come out from Wisconsin and homesteaded there in the late 1880s and by 1900 was a prominent rancher in Cherry County, so it seems likely there was some connection with Giles' decision to move there. Obviously it was there, in the ranching community around Cherry County, that he met and married Fannie Roberts. By the time he and Alice divorced in 1895 only their two youngest children, Harmon (Harm) and Burton (Burt) were still at home, and not surprisingly they went with Alice when she re-married, to a local butcher named Henry Thede.
