Description	:	Gladys Mae (Bagley) Balcom was born November 12, 1920 at Newcastle, Nebraska to Thomas and Bessie (Gaylord) Bagley, the youngest of five children. She passed away February 28, 2010 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 89 years. Gladys attended grade school and high school at the public school in Newcastle, where she played violin in the high school orchestra. her favorite subjects were the business courses of typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. Read More	Gladys Mae (Bagley) Balcom was born November 12, 1920 at Newcastle, Nebraska to Thomas and Bessie (Gaylord) Bagley, the youngest of five children. She passed away February 28, 2010 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 89 years. Gladys attended grade school and high school at the public school in Newcastle, where she played violin in the high school orchestra. her favorite subjects were the business courses of typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. She was baptized as a young girl; she played the piano and taught Sunday School at the Congregational Church in Newcastle. She played softball on the town team, worked in the Grocery and Dry Goods Store, and earned her spending money by delivering papers, following in the footsteps of her dad, who was a rural mail carrier for 35 years. On February 20, 1940, she married Gerald Balcom and they made their home near Wheeler, South Dakota for four years. In 1944, they moved to a farm nine miles north of Bonesteel where they lived until 1956 when they moved into town. Gladys faithfully attended the Calvary Bible Church in Bonesteel and taught Sunday School for many years. In 1990 Gerald and Gladys moved to Parkview Manor in Burke and attended the Union Baptist Church. She was famous for making homemade breads. She enjoyed sewing for her family and others; knitting and crocheting were also her favorite pastimes. Last summer she crocheted over one hundred butterflies which are on display in the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas, in memory of children who died in the Holocaust. he was a good neighbor and friend, always willing to help wherever needed. Gladys and Gerald were the parents of five children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; one daughter Edith Kay; her granddaughter Jana Waddell; great-granddaughters Samantha and Jocelyn Hutton; two brothers: Walter and Don and two sisters: Nellie and Lola. Gladys is survived by her children: Esther (Robert) Waddell, Arthur (Marcia) Balcom, Robert (Dona) Balcom, and Elaine (David) Gnirk; grandchildren: Jeff (Melissa) Waddell, Andy Waddell, Donna (Clinton) Kiewel, Betsy (Rob) Christensen, Becky (Tim) VanLiere, Ericka Balcom, Levi (Kristen) Balcom, Sarah (Jay) Hutton, Katie (Lucas) Adams, and Stefanie (John) Gross; sixteen great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. She is fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Union Baptist Church in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland
