One of the sadest deaths we have chronicled in a long time occurred at the home of A.B. Steiner, north of Emerson, Friday of last week, when their daughter Gladys passed away after taking a dose of poison, which she mistook for medicine. This entire community was terribly shocked over the sad occurrence for Miss Gladys was popular with all who knew her. The details of the tragedy as nearly as we could learn it were as follows: The young lady, that morning about six o'clock thought to take a dose of epsom salts and in some way got hold of the wrong bottle and took a large spoonful of Sodium Floride which they purchased to spray chickens with for mites. She at once noticed the peculiar taste and on examination they found she had taken the poison as noted above. They quickly summoned a physician from Henderson and Red Oak and at once applied the antidotes known but none seemed to have effect and she passed away that same evening. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the home and was one of the most largely attended ever held in that vicinity. Masses of beautiful flowers testified to the loving remembrance of friends, relatives and societies. The services were conducted by Rev. H. S. Mitchel, pastor of the Emerson M. R. church of which the deceased was a member assisted by Key Roy V, Felt of Silver City, a former pastor, who preached the sermon. A special choir, Mrs. J. A. Thorson Jr., Mrs. Everett Whisler, and Messrs. L. Fields and Cameron Scott,sang. The remains were laid to rest in the Emerson cemetery. The deceased was born in the farm home, in which she died, some 18 years ago and has spent practically all her life in that vicinity. She graduated with honor from the Emerson schools in 1924 and the past year was a atudent at the Nebraska State University, having come home for her summer vacation some two weeks ago. The day preceding her death she and her father had spent in Omaha. She was a young lady of beautiful Christian character, strong intellectually and a personal favorite among her associates. Her death has cast a pall of gloom over that entire community and the stricken family have the deepest sympathy of all in their sorrow. Malvern Leader, Thursday, June 25, 1925.
