Description	:	Gladys (Kaufman) Waltner was born Feb. 9, 1912 to Jonathan and Clara Graber Kaufman. She grew up on a farm in East Freeman and attended country school. On Aug. 26, 1928, she was baptized in the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church. Gladys attended Freeman Academy and graduated in 1930. She earned her teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College and taught country school for two years. On Sept. 2, 1937, Gladys was married to Harold J. Waltner. They lived on the family farm two miles south of Freeman where they raised three children. They farmed until 1963, when they moved into the new home... Read More	Gladys (Kaufman) Waltner was born Feb. 9, 1912 to Jonathan and Clara Graber Kaufman. She grew up on a farm in East Freeman and attended country school. On Aug. 26, 1928, she was baptized in the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church. Gladys attended Freeman Academy and graduated in 1930. She earned her teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College and taught country school for two years. On Sept. 2, 1937, Gladys was married to Harold J. Waltner. They lived on the family farm two miles south of Freeman where they raised three children. They farmed until 1963, when they moved into the new home they built along the highway south of Freeman. Gladys began working at the Salem Home in Freeman in 1963 where she continued to work for 16 years. Harold was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on June 21, 1973. Gladys continued to live in their rural home until 1996 when she moved into a duplex next to her sister, Anna, in Freeman. On Oct. 12, 2004 she moved into the Salem Home. Gladys passed away on Oct. 21, 2008 in the Southridge Care Center in Sioux Falls after a relatively short illness. She was active in the community and in her church and enjoyed traveling, gardening and crocheting. Those left to cherish her memory are her son Ivan and Betty (Adrian) Waltner, Freeman; daughters: Patricia and Curtis Fast, Marion and Carolyn and James Gillette, Slayton, Minn.; grandchildren: Julie (Fast) and Kevin Mattson, Garret and Cindy Fast, Evan Fast, Nicole (Gillette) Ash, Eric and Krista Gillette, Dana (Fast) and Daryl (Gortmaker) and Katrina (Gillette) and Doug Schuur; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Kaufman; one brother, Kenneth and Hilda Kaufman; and one sister-in-law, Vel Kaufman. The funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem Mennonite Church with Rev. S. Roy Kaufman officiating and Harriet Kaufman as organist. Vocal music was provided by Kathy Kleinsasser, Kaye Waltner, Lyle Preheim and James Graber. Pallbearers were Kevin Mattson, Garret Fast, Evan Fast, Eric Gillette, Daryl Gortmaker and Doug Schuur. Interment was at Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.
