Kress, 81, of Epworth, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, surrounded by family. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 8 p.m. She was born on April 23, 1929, in Dyersville, daughter of John and Veronica (Jaeger) Bergfeld. She received her education in the country schools in the Zwingle area. She married John "Jack" Kress on Jan. 5, 1949, at St. Joe's Prairie; he preceded her in death on June 8, 1991. Gladys enjoyed playing cards, spending time with her family and baking. She was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Epworth. Surviving are four children, Dave (Connie) Kress, of Epworth, Marlene (James "Jay") Decker, of Bernard, and Richard (Lorraine) Kress and Linda (Mark "Fish") Dolphin, both of Farley; 16 grandchildren, Pat Kress, Dawn, Roger, Wayne and Kay Ann Kress, Rachel, Renee, Richard, Teresa, Johnna, Katelyn and Robert Decker, Chad Kress and Nicole Kress-Hunt and Crystal and Kyle Dolphin; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ed Bergfeld, of Cascade, George (Joanne) Bergfeld, of Peosta, and Danny (Diane) Bergfeld, of Bernard; two sisters, Theresa Gansemer, of Rickardsville, and Julie (Elmer) Schumann, of Dyersville; a sister-in-law, Shirley Bergfeld, of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Joe Dolanc, of Farley. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Merlin Kress, on Feb. 16, 1974; a sister, Darlene Dolanc; two brothers, Leo Bergfeld, in infancy, and John Bergfeld; a sister-in-law, Juanita Bergfeld; and a brother-in-law, Clem Gansemer.
