Born in Oakland, California on May 13, 1927 to Bernerd and Gertrude Grant, she was an only child growing up in Northern California near Carlotta, and later calling Eureka home. She passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, but only after waiting several days for her children and grandchildren to arrive safely and say their last goodbyes. She made up for being an only child by giving birth to 8 children and co-parenting a step daughter, giving her a total of 18 gandchildren, more than 25 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and dozens of beloved family friends also honored to call her mom or grandma. Gladys was a wonderful mother and cook best known for her mean chili beans and legendary potato salad, but whatever she prepared was sure to be delicious and plentiful. She enjoyed hosting holidays at her small home packed with generations of diverse and boisterous family members and friends. She made everyone feel welcome and was famous for inviting extra people who had nowhere else to go. And of course no meal was complete without dessert. Gladys had a weakness for donuts and coffee so you could always count on a pink box and a fresh pot when stopping by for a morning visit. She grew up during the Great Depression, never amassing wealth, but was rich with family love, and a willingness to share whatever she had. She enjoyed finding deals at thrift shops and yard sales, keeping her kids and grandkids clean and nicely dressed on a budget. With a maiden name of Grant, and husbands named Ford and Washington, she often joked of having a thing for presidential names. She had a wonderful unedited sense of humor and an inability to tell a lie. When she said a baby was "sweet" that typically meant it wasn't very cute. She also had knack for situational phrases like, "I'm so hungry I could eat the butt out of a skunk and use its tail for a napkin." One of her younger grandsons, thinking this was true, asked to stop and scoop up a dead one off the freeway so he could feed it to her. Cats, dogs, birds, and fish were also friends to Gladys. She loved pets and beautiful fish tanks. She had an impressive collection of salt and pepper shakers, enjoyed house plants, gardening, and reading murder mysteries and magazines. Raising so many kids made her a tough but loving mother we wouldn't trade for the world. She is survived by her children: Linda Reames (Elvin Reames), Randy Ford (Judy Ford), Diana Ford Harvey (Glen Harvey), Timothy Ford (Lavern Ford), Christopher Ford (Lenard Lenhart), Colette Washington, Candace Washington Jordan, and grandchildren: Vincent Reames, Shane Reames, Scott Ford, Tina Ford Croes, Mitsy Rocha, Larry Ford Jr., Lenette Cowan, Deana Farr, Monica Arruda, Kimberly Rencher, Bobby Close, Billy Close, Patty Close, Travis Ford, Trevor Ek, Olivia Botzler-Washington, Nelson Botzler-Washington, Victoria Mayfield, Jocelyn Murphy, Jessica Jones, Rocheal Strong, and far to many honorary children and grandchildren to name here, but you too are loved. She is preceded in death by her mother Gertrude Olivia Grant, father Bernerd Wallace Grant, son Larry Wayne Ford Sr., daughter Karen Olivia Ford Ek, great grandson Brayden Ford, and husbands, Wilber Greer, Charlie Ford, and Charles Washington. Memorial services will be held at 10 am on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Sander's Funeral Home on Wabash and E Streets in Eureka, proceeding to Sunset Memorial Park on South Broadway.
