Description	:	Glen Eldon Axthelm, 92, of North Platte and Fort Collins, Colorado, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2016, at Pathways Hospice in Loveland, Colorado. He was born on Nov. 23, 1923, in Gothenburg, the youngest of seven children born to Elmer and Grace Axthelm. He graduated from Gothenburg High School. He was born on Nov. 23, 1923, in Gothenburg, the youngest of seven children born to Elmer and Grace Axthelm. He graduated from Gothenburg High School. On April 12, 1943, at the age of 19, he was drafted by the U.S. Army during World War II. Glen tested high enough during boot camp that the Army sent him to Yale to study engineering before sending him overseas to serve his country. For the battles in the Black Forrest and Hertguhn Forrest just outside of Simmerrith, Glen was awarded the Bronze Star. After he was discharged on Jan. 22, 1946, he attended the University of Nebraska. Glen met the love of his life, Colleen, at a dance in Cozad, and they were married on May 27, 1951. They then farmed south of Gothenburg, where they were hailed out five years in a row. Glen always said he took that as a sign he needed to do something else, so in 1956, he moved his family to North Platte, where he went to work as the farm manager for the University of Nebraska Experiment Station. He retired from there 30 years later in 1986. Glen was an avid golfer and helped build the sand green golf course on the south side of Lake Maloney in North Platte. His love of the outdoors led their family on many camping, fishing and hunting outings. But his love of his family was what he held closest to his heart, especially tracking his grandchildren’s progress in life. After retirement, Glen enjoyed frequent trips to Grand Island to watch the ponies and the occasional games of chance with Colleen. Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen; an infant daughter, Zoe Ann; parents, Elmer and Grace; and his six brothers and sisters. Survivors include his three children, Susan Axthelm, of Fort Collins, Colorado, Dr. Dan (Carole) Axthelm, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Todd (Demaris) Axthelm, of Spearfish, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren, Zoe (Yancy), Kenzi Jo (Joe), Shanda, Brock, Calan (Meredith), Kashia, Taylee, Hana, Clare, Grace and Daereese; and four great-grandchildren, Sirena, Austen, Grayson and Franklin. Services will be at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
