Saturday, March 25, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 6-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Glen Eugene Frie was born January 3, 1924, at Estelline, South Dakota. In 1931, he moved with his parents, Forest and Rubye Frie,to Brookings. He graduated from Brooking High School in 1942. He began his college education at South Dakota State College, but enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946 as a radioman and gunner on a dive bomber. He loved music and was a talented trumpet-cornet player. While stationed in Oklahoma with the Navy, he was selected to be a member of a dance band called the "Swing Gunners" who toured and performed at nearby military installations. After completing his service in the Navy, he finished his education at SDSC, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1949. He was a member of the SDSC marching band and played trumpet for a collegiate dance band called the "Varsity Club." Glen worked for Frie Motor Company in Brookings. He was active in many civic and community projects which included serving as president of the Brookings Jaycees and being a member of the Brookings Elks Club. He married Barbara Ward, and they had two children, David Eugene and Kathryn Frie. At this time in his life, the family lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a salesman for the then-popular "Wonder Buildings." He eventually moved to Omaha where he remained until his death. In his later years, he became involved in the local Omaha schools, serving as a math tutor for junior and senior high students. Glen's interests in life included photography, especially of animals and birds; genealogy; music; reunions with his family and with friends from the Class of ‘42. He had a special interest in becoming proficient with computer technologies. Survivors include his daughter, Kathryn Frie, of Harrisburg, South Dakota; granddaughter, Linda Frie; two great-grandchildren: Haylie Ann Zieske and David James Neil Frie; a brother, Larry (Jean) Frie, of Bedford, Texas; a sister, Sandy (Mark) Frie-Smith, of Long Beach, California; a brother-in-law, Jim Talbert, of Brookings; an aunt, Millie Johnson, of Brookings; nieces, nephews, numerous cousins; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Zerl and Judy; and his son, David. This gentle, intelligent man, who possessed a unique, captivating sense of humor, will be missed by all who knew him.
