Description	:	Rubye Kathryn (Ross) Frie was born January 13, 1909, daughter of William and Bertha (Breed) Ross, who farmed near Estelline. She died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. She suffered a stroke on March 2. Rubye was a 1928 graduate of Estelline High School where she was a letter-winner in basketball. She worked as a telephone operator in Estelline where she met and married Forest Frie in 1931. Read More	Rubye Kathryn (Ross) Frie was born January 13, 1909, daughter of William and Bertha (Breed) Ross, who farmed near Estelline. She died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. She suffered a stroke on March 2. Rubye was a 1928 graduate of Estelline High School where she was a letter-winner in basketball. She worked as a telephone operator in Estelline where she met and married Forest Frie in 1931. They moved to Brookings shortly therafter and remained here for the duration of their lives. Forest, a former mayor of Brookings, died in 1986. Rubye was a long time member of Eastern Star and helped charter the local chapter of Job's Daughters. She was active in the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary and blood bank, Mary Circle of First Presbyterian Church, and a volunteer at the South Dakota Art Museum. She enjoyed candelmaking, crocheting afghans, playing piano, playing cards, traveling, and most of all, being with her family. Survivors include two sons: Larry (Jean) of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Glen of Omaha, Nebraska; two daughters: Judy (Jim) Talbert and Sandra J. Frie, both of Brookings; seven grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; one greatgreatgrandchild; five stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreatgrandchildren; and one sister, Millie Johnson, of Brookings. Rubye was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Forest; a daughter, Zerl,; two brothers, Bert and Harvey Ross; and a sister, Vera.
