Glen Marshall Cowan, 90 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska (formerly of Oxford), passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Glen was born November 5, 1926 southwest of Oxford in Furnas County, the youngest of six children born to Guy Sandford and Eda K. (Hellner) Cowan. He received his primary education from District #98 in Furnas County and then Oxford Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1944. On December 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty Ann Stephens at the Methodist Parsonage in Alma and this marriage was blessed with two daughters: Katherine Ann and Rosann Marie. They made their home on the family farm six miles southwest of Oxford, where Glen and Betty engaged in farming and worked side-by-side for their entire working years until their retirement in 2002. He was very talented at woodworking, enjoyed playing cards and watching the Husker Football games. Glen was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Oxford. Glen was on the Oxford School Board for over 15 years and a Furnas County Commissioner for 28 years. He was also very active in the Monument Masonic Lodge No. 293 in Arapahoe, Nebraska until transferring his membership to Holdrege. In January 2013, the couple moved to Holdrege Memorial Homes. Betty preceded him in death on September 15, 2015. Besides his wife and parents; he was preceded in death by; one granddaughter, Sara Weatherwax and one great-granddaughter, Macy Weatherwax both in infancy; three brothers: Alvin Cowan and his wife, Ora, John Cowan and his wife, Millie, and Carson Cowan and his wife, Hoylett; and two sisters: Anna Englebrecht and her husband, Gib and Pauline Cowan. He leaves to celebrate his life; two daughters: Kathy Weatherwax of Oxford, and Rose Fryda and her husband, Don of Chadron, Nebraska; four grandchildren: David Weatherwax and his wife, Tricia of Oxford, Jeremy Fryda and his wife, Katie of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, Cy Fryda and his wife, Jessica of Chadron and Emily Weatherwax of Holdrege; seven great-grandchildren: A.J., Tate and Ellie Weatherwax, Travis Fryda, Jennifer and Hallie Chipperfield and Zoe Gaghagen; two brothers-in-law: Robert Stephens and his wife, Lela of Naponee, Nebraska and Neil Stephens and his wife, Beth of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford. A memorial has been established in Glen’s honor and kindly suggested to the United Methodist Church in Oxford.
